Pararescue History
The origins of pararescue can be traced back to World War II, when the Army Air Corps developed a program to train airmen to rescue downed aircrews behind enemy lines. The first pararescue unit was activated in 1943, and PJs played a vital role in the war effort, rescuing over 12,000 downed airmen.
After the war, the pararescue program was transferred to the Air Force, and PJs have continued to serve as the military's primary combat rescue force. PJs have deployed to every major conflict involving the United States since World War II, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the War in Afghanistan.
Pararescue Training
Pararescue training is one of the most challenging and demanding in the military. PJs are required to master a wide range of skills, including:
- Freefall parachuting
- Combat diving
- Battlefield medicine
- Survival skills
- Hostage rescue
PJs must also be able to work independently and as part of a team, and they must be capable of making quick decisions in stressful situations.
Pararescue Missions
PJs conduct a wide range of missions, including:
- Downed aircrew recovery
- Combat search and rescue (CSAR)
- Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
- Counterterrorism operations
- Special operations missions
PJs are often called upon to operate in dangerous and hostile environments, and they have a long history of completing successful missions even when the odds are stacked against them.
Pararescue Tools and Equipment
PJs use a variety of specialized tools and equipment to accomplish their missions. Some of the most important equipment includes:
- Halo parachutes
- Combat diving gear
- Battlefield medical kits
- Survival kits
- Hostage rescue gear
PJs are also trained to use a variety of weapons and equipment, including rifles, shotguns, and explosives.
Pararescue Operations: Techniques and Procedures provides a comprehensive overview of the tools, techniques, and procedures used by PJs to accomplish their complex and dangerous missions. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the world of pararescue and the history, training, and missions of this elite force.
